What are ACME Lead Screws?

Thread Profile

The ACME thread has a 29° included angle, giving it a wide, flat thread form that distributes load across a larger contact area than standard V-threads. This makes it ideal for applications where axial force — not speed — is the primary requirement.

Unlike ball screws, ACME lead screws are inherently self-locking under most conditions, meaning the load will not back-drive the screw if the drive motor is switched off. This is critical in vertical lifting or clamping applications.

TNL Engineering Works Pte Ltd machines ACME threads to DIN/ANSI standards or fully to your drawing — including non-standard pitches, multi-start configurations, and combined profiles on the same shaft.

Right for your Application?

 Industrial Presses and Vises

High axial clamping force, intermittent duty, self-locking when stopped. ACME is the thread of choice.

  Lifting and Positioning Jacks

Where loads must be held without continuous motor power. Self-locking prevents back-driving.

  Offshore & Subsea Equipment

Corrosion-resistant alloy ACME screws for harsh environments. Super duplex and CRA grades available.

ACME Capability Range

Lead screws at 29° standard ACME thread angle profile, machined to your drawing (complete with journals, keyways, cross-holes and other end features), and suited to your unique application.

Outer Diameter

10 – 200 mm.

Confirm with us for lead screws of diameters above 150mm.

Max Length

Up to 1,500 mm.

Longer lengths subject to deflection review.

Lead Time

Est. 5 – 10 days, subject to job complexity.

Rush orders considered.

What are Trapezoidal Lead Screws?

Thread Profile

The trapezoidal thread follows the ISO metric standard (DIN 103), with a 30° included angle — 1° narrower than ACME. This seemingly small difference gives the trapezoidal profile a higher mechanical efficiency, meaning less torque is required to move the same load at the same speed.

It is the dominant lead screw form in European-designed machinery, CNC machine tools, and precision automation equipment. If your machine was designed in Europe or manufactured to metric standards, it almost certainly uses a trapezoidal lead screw.

TNL Engineering Works Pte Ltd machines trapezoidal threads to DIN 103 or fully to your drawing — including non-standard pitches, multi-start configurations, and end-journal machining on the same part.

Right for your Application?

 CNC Machine Replacement

Worn Tr-series lead screws on lathes, mills, or EDM machines. We machine to match your existing nut or supply both.

  Industrial Automation

Actuators, gantries, and linear stages. Trapezoidal is efficient enough for motorised drives without the cost of a ball screw.

  Offshore & Subsea Equipment

Super duplex and CRA trapezoidal screws for valve actuators and subsea equipment in corrosive environments.

  Precision Instruments

Fine-pitch single-start screws for optical tables, lab equipment, and medical devices where positioning accuracy matters.

Trapezoidal Capability Range

Tr [diameter] × [pitch] — e.g. Tr 20×4 lead screws at 30° ISO metric standard profile, machined to your drawing and configured to your required travel speed and load.

Outer Diameter

8 – 200 mm.

Confirm with us for lead screws of diameters above 150mm.

Thread Starts

Single to quad-start (1 – 4).

Multi-start increases lead (i.e. linear advancement per revolution).

Lead Time

Est. 5 – 10 days, subject to job complexity.

Rush orders considered.
